Annual leave

Grades 1-5:
The full-time annual leave entitlement is 25 days in your first year, rising to 30 days on 1st September, subject to one year of continuous service.

In addition to this staff at all grades enjoy 12 statutory days (pro rata as appropriate).

Grades 6-9:
The full time annual leave entitlement is 35 days.

In addition to this staff at all grades enjoy 12 statutory days (pro rata as appropriate).

PDR

Knowledge Transfer Affiliate

Annual leave is managed locally within your school or unit. You can request annual leave by accessing MyMet through the University’s intranet, InSite.

MetCard

Your Met Card will provide you with access to any relevant areas of the campus, as well as enabling you to release print jobs from the self- service machines.

You will receive your MetCard on your first day.

MetActive

Met Active offers a range of different programmes for all abilities. Our fantastic, discounted staff membership gives you access to the excellent facilities and programmes on offer here at Cardiff Met.

Based across both Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses we aim to have an impact on all staff at Cardiff Met.

The Met Active Team are highly qualified and experienced fitness professionals who can provide clients with a range of training expertise to achieve any health and fitness goal. These include Classes (from yoga to Bootcamp), personal programmes, personal training or as simple as giving you advice, these are available both in person and virtually.

Chaplaincy and prayer rooms

The Chaplaincy team is a pastoral resource for the whole Cardiff Met community. There are facilities for prayer and quiet reflection at all our campuses for staff of all faiths. Room details are below:

Llandaff: A0.22 (Women) and A0.23 (Men). There are ablution facilities in both rooms.

Cyncoed: B009. Ablution facilities can be found in the foot spa opposite C0.23.

Llandaff Cathedral is a 5 min walk from the Llandaff campus and can be used throughout the day.

Parenting rooms

Cardiff Met is committed to providing rest, breastfeeding/expressing and changing facilities on both of our campuses to support parents working, studying or visiting the university.

Two private and welcoming Parenting Rooms are available to anyone who needs to attend to the caring needs of a child, including feeding and changing. The rooms also contain facilities for breastfeeding mothers to express milk.

The rooms include sofas, fridges, baby changing facilities, microwaves and hand sanitising products. Both rooms are accessible without the need to retrieve a key or book. They both have a ‘Vacant / In Use’ sign that can be changed prior to entering and the ability to lock whilst in the room for privacy. Room details are below:

Catering facilities and Met Rewards App

Met rewards is the mobile app that allows you to earn loyalty points and rewards in any cafes and restaurants at Cardiff Met. Download the app from the App Store or Google Pay.

Health assured

Provided by Health Assured, all core staff and their immediate family can access the highly regarded Employee Assistance Programme free of charge. They provide independent specialist wellbeing support on a confidential basis.

The support provided includes:

  • A free 24/7 confidential telephone helpline to access all of the services including wide- ranging support from formal counselling to housing/tenancy/debt concerns and personal legal information and tax support. Your call will be answered by a trained counsellor who will direct you to the appropriate support.
  • An online wellbeing portal.
  • Free access to the mobile phone app ‘Wisdom’, providing reliable wellbeing information and practical in the moment tools/techniques.
  • Health Assured operate this service completely independently and confidentially. The only information that they will share with the University is analytical usage data (excluding identifying factors) so we can be aware of any peaks/troughs in usage and any themes emerging that we might need to address on a university-wide basis.

Staff networks

Networking with like-minded people is a great way to get the most out of working at Cardiff Met.

Networks meet formally at least once a term, alternating between focussed meetings and open social events where members can catch up. They are a great way to network, build contacts, share experiences, arrange events and influence and drive positive change.

Induction

Your induction will depend on your contract type, and will typically consist of:

Additionally, academic staff will complete:

  • Research Ethics: emodule – to be completed within the first four weeks.
  • Academic Induction: live session to be completed within the first three months.

Your manager or designated person/buddy will provide you with a local induction to inform you of the key health and safety arrangements, local procedures and other information relative to your new job. Links to the essential e-modules will be sent to you by your line manager.

The Quality and Enhancement Directorate provide a full day induction into the essentials of teaching and learning at Cardiff Met. You will explore basic principles or pedagogic practice and learn about the strategic and policy imperatives of the teaching role in order to maximise student learning, and comply with University standards.

Research Ethics emodule. The module provides an introduction to research ethics with a focus on roles that approve ethics applications. The module:

• provides a brief introduction to research ethics;
• outlines key principles of research ethics;
• covers important ethical issues common to most research projects;
• provides two real-life research project approval scenario examples;
• identifies sources of information about ethics.

Digital and Library Services

You have access to the University’s Learning Centres and are eligible to borrow up to thirty books at a time. You have access to wide-ranging e-content through our library discovery service, MetSearch.

Only a call or email away, are our IT Helpdesk and IT advisers are here to help you resolve any IT issues. Our digital skills training service is available to ensure you develop the transferrable skills you need in your role at Cardiff Met and beyond.

With your log in from ITHelpdesk ithelpdesk@cardiffmet.ac.uk you can access your staff emails and the computer network. Most links will only be accessible once you have logged in.

Organisational development

The OD team work in partnership with schools and directorates to support strategic priorities, a values driven culture and to support effective change. We do this via OD projects and initiatives and develop and deliver bespoke development opportunities for schools/directorates, teams and individuals.

The OD team offer several development opportunities for our people including:

  • Leadership & development programmes.
  • Short courses, bite-size courses, Leading Lights online development toolkit and e- modules.
  • External development initiatives such as Aurora, W30/50, WHEELP, SWIMM and Academi Wales.
  • OD support functional teams via Insights Discovery®, facilitation of team events.
  • Team/individual coaching.

If you’re joining us as a line manager, you’ll be invited to complete our Manage@Met programme. Manage@Met is an essential suite of bite-sized sessions to enhance capability and consistency in our people management across Cardiff Met, and must be completed within one year of your start date.

Transport

You have free membership of Ovo (Next bikes) with bike stations at all campuses. There are secure bike shelters, lockers and showers to make cycling to work more attractive available at both Llandaff and Cyncoed Campus.

The Staff Cycle scheme allows you to purchase a new bike through salary deductions and tax savings. New purchase windows and details of how to take part are announced on the University’s intranet, InSite.

Monthly Dr Bike sessions are available where you can receive a free cycle MOT are held on both campuses as part of the Community Day.

The Met Rider is operating a reduced service this year between the Cyncoed and Llandaff Campuses. You can still apply for a Cardiff Met discounted bus pass which enables free access to Cardiff Bus services.

If you intend to drive to work you will need to display a valid parking permit. In order to apply for either a 12 month ticket (paid via your salary) or a pay and display permit, please click here.

An additional parking restriction is in place for staff based at the Llandaff campus and living within a nominal 2-mile radius of the campus.

Payroll and pensions

You will be paid on the following days according to your role:

Professional Services: 15th of each month
Casual staff: 10th of each month
Academics: 28th of each month

If your pay date falls on a weekend, you will be paid on the Friday before. Your pay slip is available via MyMet.

• TPS (Teachers’ Pension Scheme).
• USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme).
